A lot of oil from wet sumping.....

#1

Post by OLD WUN »

I have checked the knowledge site but still not sure why so much oil. I took a look at the steel ball and it looks like new! Not able to see seat as the bike is a driver and full of oil. Maybe I should. This 1949 Pan sat for 25 years before my friend sold it to me and almost all the oil leaked out. I only ran it a few miles since. I parked it 6 months ago to do a few little things and it has now leaked a half cup of oil. I am going to replace the spring not sure if that will help but a cheap item to try. Just wish I could control it a little bit better. I have a 1965 Panhead it never leaks a drop sitting for a long time. Any thoughts are welcome...... :x

I think if it only dumped 1/2 cup in 6 months, I wouldn't mind that a bit!

1/2 cup, that's nada, but again, it the ball is not seating, it will sump some. weld a rod on a ball then drop in place and tap it a couple times, sometimes that helps.

I have placed an O-ring, as wide and thick as would fit in the hole, between the ball and seat, spring stretched a bit ('52 FL). Bike has been on blocks several months. Under the breather/drip tube there is a 2 in. wide stain I can wet my finger tip in (half teaspoon?). Modern materials.
