What is the thread size for stock panhead valve cover screws? I need to buy a helicoil kit to repair a couple of stripped holes.

1/4" - 20tpi. I need to do the same, but am waiting until I need to take the heads off. In the meantime I'm running a slightly smaller screw (#12 IIRC) with a nut underneath.

The stock screws are 10-24 thread size, not 1/4". If your holes are 1/4" you have a rough road to get back to stock.

Man you got that right....... You would have to weld up the holes to get them back to stock.....

I misspoke - my pan cover screws are #10 - 24 as Robbie said. I mistook the nut from my box of screws that fits my spare pan cover screw as being 1/4". Mea culpa.

doc
Time Serts may cost more for the kit needed to install an insert, but you want to do it right one time and have confidence in the repair.
I never felt confident tightening down on heli-coils. Just my opinion as they say.

I've never had a problem with heli-coils in this application.

Agreed. For this application helicoils work fine. The torque spec is something like 14 inch-pounds for pan cover screws.

Harleyfunds:

Helicoil is the brand name.

You can get them in some exotic materials like titanium and phosphor bronze, but the standard ones are stainless steel. That's what I would use.

You'll need a the proper sized drill, and also a special Helicoil tap for the inserts. You can buy them in kits that include the tap and teh installation tool:
