Hello all. Is a 1960 Pan supposed the have the tabbed style thrust washer behind the cam or a plain round type? Manuals appears to show the tabbed style but I've read somewhere this was only necessary if the cam runs in a needle bearing. The case around the plain bearing in my motor it damaged where a tabbed washer has spun previously. Can i just fit a plain thrust washer, are they available as a H/D part and does anyone know the P/N?
Thanks.

Re: Cam thrust washer
The washer with the ears rides between the Torrinton needle bearing and the cam thrust washer. It keeps the thrust washer from spinning against the needle bearing, and gives it a true surface to seat against. Thrust washers come in different thicknesses from .050" to .075" in .005" increments....bosheff

Re: Cam thrust washer
Thanks Bosheff. So If I don't have a Torrington bearing just the plain bronze bearing then I don't need to thrust washer with lugs?

Re: Cam thrust washer
That is correct, as the flange on the bushing acts as the thrust surface for the spacing washer. So If I don't have a Torrington bearing just the plain bronze bearing then I don't need to thrust washer with lugs?

Re: Cam thrust washer
You do still need the variable washer to set cam end play.since you have a cam bushing it is likely that your right case is pre 1958.

StueyC!
It is hard to imagine a tanged washer spinning without blowing the case!

Re: Cam thrust washer
Cotten, both tangs on the washer snapped off when they connected the steel mains boss cast into the crankcase. The right cas is 48 and the left 60 which explains the plain bearing.
Thanks.

StueyC!
And it also explains the shattered tanged thrustwasher, as the early case is not properly machined to accept it.
