J grind cam vs single point timer
Good morning, put a J grind cam into a '61 pan motor, using the stock single fire ignition system, motor is std config.
It will not run...if it does it runs rubbish and very hot...wondering if the cam + single points are compatible?
motor has:
wiseco pistons
S'nS springs
rowe valves
all else is stock for that year

Re: J grind cam vs single point timer
I don't know what a "J" grind cam is, but if it's designed for a pan it should work with the single point ignition set-up. I'd check the timing, point adjustment, carb adjustments, and suckin air for starters....bosheff

Re: J grind cam vs single point timer
Hi bosheff, J grind is manf by Andrew's, classed as a mild cam per spec sheet, it has a different duration from a stock cam, now considering the single point set-up I'm not sure if the two will work in harmony...?

G'day Stockpan,
It will work fine, you'd better go over all you have done and double check.
I'm running a J grind in both my pans and both have single point circuit breakers.
I like these cams.
Pete

StockPan!
I always suspect a vacuum leak first, and often it is the last place I look.
Please pressuretest your manifold assembly with soapy water, and test each pan cover screw over each intake port as well: [url]http://virtualindian.org/11techleaktest.html]
Once that probability is eliminated, we can go on to other possibilities.
....Cotten
PS: A dual point timer is "single-fire", and a single point timer is "lost-spark", firing both cylinders at the same time.

Re: J grind cam vs single point timer
thanks, I had my terminology mixed up, it is a dual point timer.
So to clarify, the slight change in duration of the cam vs the timing lobes should not be an issue?
This bike is a strange animal...has me perplexed!...I'll see if the inlet manifold is the culpret.
Any other suggestions are welcome...thank you

StockPan!
Although performance cams might benefit from a slightly different timing (degrees before top center), and anything is possible with an Andrews product, your timer itself should not be the issue, if it is mechanically sound of course!
One possible diabolical problem that does come to mind is if the idler drive gear within the cam chest has excessive endplay, and "walks", thus constantly changing your timing.
That can make one lose stomach lining for sure!

Cotten, the idler has a fresh shaft and bush, I think that can be eliminated...feel like taking a holiday to South Africa....snigger!

Re: J grind cam vs single point timer
If you are not fussy about originality you could pull the timer out and replace it with a single point setup.Way less headaches and you lose a coil to boot.

StockPan!
Anywhere away from here would be a holiday this time of year.
Are you familiar with Chris James? I believe his operation is "Flat Earth Spares" (trusting a doooomed memory)?
And Nmaineron!
The dual-point circuit breaker was H-D's finest! It even "distributed" the spark, almost like an Indian. The wonderful exhaust note alone is worth it.

Re: J grind cam vs single point timer
cotten, I've been dealing with Chris for many years (17), he has a good rep in vintage circles. We are around 450 miles apart, I'll be sending him a '42 UL to rebuild pretty soon.
I've had no time yet but this week end should yield some free time to look at the pan.

cotten, change of subject - are you aware of any indian projects avail - late 40's? - although the first of the glide models are my favourite.
