Ok I'm a first timer on panheads and have a question about the idler shafts in the cam case. I'd sent my motor to town to be repaired after a bottom end seizeup(cold weather/70wt oil). Anyway cases were cracked and had to be welded and line bored. After waiting on the motor for two years I went and collected the parts and brought them home to do myself. The cam case had the idler shafts removed and the threads are pukered on one of the holes. It looks to be left handed threads-am I blind or is this so. If so where would I find the tap to clean out the hole? Hopefully someone can straighten me out. Also does anyone have a cam recomendation for a stock bore and stoke engine with linkert carb. (53FLE)
Thanks,
John

Re: idler shafts
1959-69 engines used a left hand 1\4x20 thread on the circuit breaker drive shaft screw.A 53 model should not have a left hand thread there. There is an internet company that will make up any size tap or die you require. If I were in your position I would helicoil the hole 1\4x20 right hand and change screws. For a cam the old factory H cam is hard to beat for a 74".

Re: idler shafts
Left-hand taps are readily available in standard sizes.

Re: idler shafts
Good to see another 53FLE out there!
I just went through mine two years ago. I believe the threads were 1/4-24, not 1/4-20.
This is a "retired" odd size by today's standards, so can be a bear to find!
Might want to double check. Also both shaft studs were the normal right-hand thread.
I too have a stock stroke, but 0.060 over cylinders with 8:1 compression. Mine had a cam from a 61", but later was told that FLE's came from the factory with the 61" cam (hense called the traffic combination) to run cooler.
I am running a Sifton 412 cam and it runs pretty good with the stock set-up. I hear an andrews "A" grind works pretty good as well, but never ran one.

Re: idler shafts
Thank you guys for the info. The guy I trusted with the rebuild that I give up on must have mixed my parts with others. Good reason the left hand threaded shaft wouldn't work. I'll go on the search for the right tap to fix the threads I boogered up.

Re: idler shafts
Stick with a stock FLH/Victory cam. In the long run you will have less cam/lifter related problems. The stock FLH/Victory cam is an excellent piece, and is hard to beat overall....bosheff
