Idler gear identification

#1

Post by jarhead »

I supposively have in my possesion a Panhead Idler gear. The one pictured on the right is mine out of a 1962. In my original parts catolog it states that part # 25775-36 is used from 1941 to 1968. Is the 1969 Idler gear different? Can anyone identify the gear on the left? Maybe a 45 ul? Any and all replys are appreciated.

On the above picture, my gear on the right has 51 teeth. The gear that is in question has 46 teeth if this helps anyone. Here is a shot of it in the cam chest. The gear will not even engage the intermediate gear. Still thinking it from a 45.

Jarhead!

It could easily be for a U as well: I shall try to find more diameter and teeth # info at the shop today.

here's a picture of my pan and the idler gear has 51 teeth.
In my parts-book there are three types:OHV,45-sidevalve and 74/80-sidevalve, maybe the 46 teeth is for the older model sportster?

Looking good hydra74! Maybe a sportster gear, who knows. I'm curious if Cotton found any info on it...

I pulled out 4 different 45 WL gears I had in the shop and they are all exactly the same. No markings anywhere; no part numbers, no casting number, no index marks. The diameter at the outside of the teeth is almost exactly 3" and they have 46 teeth. Looks very similar to the gear on the left in your first pic.

FlatHeadSix, appreciate it. The gear in question is now back with the previous owner since it doesn't fit my application. Thanks to all who helped in this inquiry.

Sorry for a late reply, Jarhead,

I never found any examples to compare in my stash...
