NEED NEW CAM??
Trying to decide on a new cam. Pan has S&S 84 CI stroker kit with 7.5:1 cast pistons. Was running Sifton cobra 440 lift till case cracked at bushing and ruined cam. All repaired now. Liked that cam but not wanting china made now. Anything over 450 will require me to relieve case at cast in bearing retainer and screw up new bushings. Hoping some of you experienced builders and riders will give me some suggestions. Crane 296A will not clear bearing insert. Andrews J or 1 ???

You can't go wrong with the J cam, my mill loves it... Given your motor specs, I'm sure there's others out there as well.

Is it's the bronze bushing, yes, if it's the needle bearing, I'm not sure.steve_wood wrote:Will the Andrews J fit in the bushing in the cam chest?

Re: NEED NEW CAM??
It was my understanding that all new cams are made for needle bearings. The bushing has been reamed for new cams, and a lot of riders are using this set up. Am I wrong?

Re: NEED NEW CAM??
Upjohn--you cant go wrong with the J or #1 cam!---the needle was put in 58!, With your stroke the #1 would be real nice!-It will be all tourque as was meant to be!. The J is good to, but at 84in. I would go with the #1!--I have put #1s in 74s & its a real wakeup!-1500-4000 Is good running! If your doing 60-65 at 3000 or a little less (dont know your gearing)-A twist and a eyeblink your at 90!---NICE CAM!----Richie----can be bolted in stock no headwork!---Although a set of fresh springs is always nice!---I olny put these in with solids, dont know how they act with hyd.!

Re: NEED NEW CAM??
All original 1936-57 cams are sized for the .812" bushing.
All original 1958-* and all aftermarket cams are sized for the slightly larger needle bearing.
If your bushing was sized correctly, no aftermarket cam will fit.
The J is preferred over the 1, more duration.
You're giving up a lot of power just to avoid a few minutes Dremel work on the retainer.

I miss Tom Sifton too.
I have never held a "Velva Touch" in my hand, and doubt it would change my opinion anyway.
Bushings are not to be sized arbitrarily.
Often bushings must be custom-cut undersize, and fit to an individual journal.
You may wish to consider having your damaged cam journal re-ground.

Anyone skilled and equip't with a lathe and toolpost grinder can dress a journal.
Can you post a pic of the damage?
