Crank Case Check Valve

#1

Post by steve_wood »

So apparently the MoCo introduced, in 1952, a check valve in the crank case to prevent oil from leaking down out of the heads and the head feeder tubes. The valve consisted of a ball bearing and a spring. (part numbers 8856 and 24992-52 respectively).

I was talking to olddude this morning and he told me that the spring and ball were discontinued after early 1952 because it was determined that the check valve was not needed.

Steve!

Old Dude quotes the Scriptures: The Parts Book.

The ballcheck was a failed attempt to make the flawed top-of-the-rod hydraulics work, so it was discarded when the 'modern' Eaton tappet hydraulics were introduced.

The ball probably hurts nothing, and perhaps oils the top two seconds quicker,.. but certainly no longer necessary unless, for some reason, those pushrods must be used.

Thanks Tom, that makes sense.

For any one who's interested, NOSParts has all the parts for the check valve assembly, except the screen. Olddude has the screen, and although it's a repop, he usually has high standards and his stuff is good.
