Cases matching (61" with 74")

The left is still 61" and the right is 74". Can these be matched?

Cases matching (61" with 74")

#1

Post by 10truck »

I have just bought a basket with a stock left '51 case and a aftermarket right case. The left is still 61" and the right is 74". Can these be matched? So far I have gotten answer both ways, yes and no. Can anyone here tell me for sure? I would greatly appreciate any info. Thank you

"Matching the cases" refers to line-honing the mains, not to stroke.

If the replacement case is correct, it should be little more than a matter of indexing and refitting for rollers.

Thanks for getting back to me. All I know is they need to be matched for the 74" flywheels. I was told the only thing that needs to be done is to remove the oil scavenger from the 61". Does this sound right?

Dale!
Here's a guess at what you have been told:

The 'oil scavanger" must refer to the cast-in scraper that peels the oil off of the wheels as they go by.
'36 to '40 or so wheels were smaller, and all 61". These are smaller than '41 and later wheels, whether 74" or 61".
If you were to be putting "41 and later wheels into pre-'41 cases, then the scraper would have to be filed back.
But your later pan cases already have scrapers for any 74' wheel.

Caveat: You never trust anything until you finger it together .
