hydraulic tappet insert
To determine if a hydraulic insert is useable, is the testing method as described in the 59-69 factory shop manual considered gospel? Should you use a laquer thinner type or a more oiley solevent like a wash tank or kerosene solevent?

Re: hydraulic tappet insert
I used brake cleaner and dry it thoroughly . any oil or solvent will give you a false test.

6hds!
If it fails the book test, its real bad.
After thorough flush using a toothpick to open the valve, and dried with compressed air, I lube the piston with a thin film of petrolatum, especially before storage, or if the motor will not soon be fired.

Re: hydraulic tappet insert
bought 4 new v-twin "sifton" units. cleaned throughly with brakeleen and all 4 failed check valve test. passed otherwise. maybe just a bad batch? Anyone have luck with these or other brands? By the way, bought these in a set with 4 "standard' tappets. They all measured at .7317? What's with that? Thanks for the response, Gary

Sifton products are now all made in China. Take that for what it's worth.6hds wrote:bought 4 new v-twin "sifton" units. cleaned throughly with brakeleen and all 4 failed check valve test. passed otherwise. maybe just a bad batch?
