Crankpin advise needed
I need to change the crankpin in my 64 FL. The one I am replacing has 1 hole, most of the replacements have 3 holes,is this the way to go? I don't want to lose any oil pressure to the additional holes. Can someone give me any info Thanks

How long did the 1 hole last you? I bought my pan in 85 and rebuilt it. It had a two hole in it and I replaced it with a 2 hole. This Memorial Day will be 2 years since its last rebuild. I replace the pin with another Jim's 2 hole. Whichever way you go, try to buy a quality pin. Let us know how it turns out.

I went to a 2 hole pin,the oil is not pressuring directly on the bearing,no skidding of the roller,my theory, nobody's else.but have had 1 hole,3 hole with no probs.......WITH RESPECT...............JR.............jims..........S&S........eastern......only prob with jims, they got there heads up there ass!amiabledave wrote:How long did the 1 hole last you? Re: Crankpin advise needed
I would say that should answer the question. I replaced the 35 year old crankpin in my Pan in 96 with one I bought from the local HD Dealer. I would search out an OEM pin. If OEM was available for Indian I would use those as well. Yes, Indian used a 4 hole pin, It seems like I see more trashed Indian pins than Harley!ultrapan wrote: It's been in there since 64,This is the first time the cases have been opened up.

Re: Crankpin advise needed
The original pins were always one hole. I have never seen any definitive proof that more holes were better. Roller bearings only need a thin film of oil at all times, not lots of volume and don't need pressure feed. That is why the original set-up only used a momentary feed on the pinion. When H-D went to full flow oiling they also had to notch the races to allow excess oil out and prevent hydraulic lock of the rollers. They did it for cooling purposes as they kept trying to get more power out of outdated technology. Interestingly when they went to full flow they created huge problems for the hydraulic lifters, but that is another story.
Some very successful engines (BMW pre '70) that did very high mileages did not even pressure feed their cranks, centrifugal force does it. And they rev higher than H-Ds.
The more oil you push in there, the better means you need to get it out as well. Thin constant film is the key, not a cavity full of liquid.

Re: Crankpin advise needed
I would not think that the Crankpin in that picture was causing any Knock!
