63 outside oil lines
I am aware that 63 is the first year for the outside oil line feeds to the heads and am looking at a 63 FL but it doesn't have the external oil lines. Is it possible that some of the early 63's did not have the external lines? The numbers look good, the belly numbers match and there is a port for the oil line feed on the right side case. I had a set of Panheads a long time ago that had the bosses on the heads for the external lines but they were just the boss and not machined so I'm thinking this bike is a very early 63 or someone has modified it to accept the earlier heads. Anybody know if it's possible that any early 63's came through without the external lines? Belly#'s are 163-3231 if that helps.

Reddog74USA!
Anything is possible but...
The heads you mention were produced for retro-fits to earlier models.
T'is a pity you did not find such a pair instead of earlier castings!

Re: 63 outside oil lines
Late 62 have an undrilled boss, 63-65 have external feed (per Palmer).
It is not clear if THIS bike has no boss, undrilled boss, drilled boss.
If no boss stand on your head and read the casting number and date.
My guess is earlier heads.

Re: 63 outside oil lines
Thanks for the replies so far. I did check the Palmer book and found that all the 63's had the oil lines. The 63 FL will arrive tomorrow and I will let you know what I find. I got a good deal on it so either way I'm good with it.

Re: 63 outside oil lines
Ok got the bike today and it has definitly been hybirdized. It does run good, smooth and shifts very smooth also. Can I just bolt a set of side oilers on it or will I have to get a different set of cylinders also?

Re: 63 outside oil lines
Is there any indication of how the top end is oiling now? The '63 cases and cylinders are not set up for internal feed so how does the oil get up there?
Any cylinders will work as passages can be plugged if not needed. The heads are specific to '63-'65.

Re: 63 outside oil lines
Looks like it may be time for some exploratory surgery as I want to make this right. Is there any place I can find a set of correct heads for this bike?

Re: 63 outside oil lines
Could ya post a pic of the right side case between the lifter blocks. Like Rubone says, it's gotta be gettin oil to the top somehow. Leads me to believe that it probably isn't a 63, 4, or 5 bottom....bosheff

I like it...just like it sits. Any information on the seating ya got on that bike?
You got the look on your bike that I am looking for.
George
PS.
I have a set of outside oiler heads at Don Sullivans aka Headhog being worked on/repaired. Since I found them, and sent them to Don for repair, I found another set of heads that I will be using for my engine. And I may be willing to part with the outside oiler heads once they come back to me. PM or email.

Re: 63 outside oil lines
My '57 has a Right '63 case and it had the '57 heads without the oil lines. After much thought on how it was oiling what I decided was my heads were being oiled through the push rod tubes. I can honestly say this, when I pull the rockers apart they were being oiled very well.
Your 1963 case has the front oil hole going to the cylinder but it has a welsh plug from the factory. I successfully drilled the oil hole for the the rear cylinder oil hole. It's easy to drill out the welsh plug but drilling the oil hole into the case is a challenge.
Someone could have drilled your '63 case already.
Here's the thread with where I drilled my '63 right case. https://www.hydra-glide.net/phpBB3/view ... f=5&t=8926

Re: 63 outside oil lines
119-50 and 119-501 are 50 to 54 heads.
Please post the casting dates for the cylinders, they are located on the cylinder base, usually under the carb, format like J 5-1.
Please post the belly number from the right case (on bottom).
If the right case is 62 or earlier it has the internal feed, otherwise some could have added it later.
Let us figure out what you have.
