which gear takes the larger key and which takes the smaller? why the 2 different sizes? is there a problem with using the larger key in all three locations? i tried the larger keys in all three locations and they fit.

Which pump do you have? All the aluminum pumps use the longer keys. The iron pumps use the long key on the drive gear and scavenge gears, the short key on the feed (thinner) gears. The key is short so it does not contact the case or body when in use.
