Quick Newbie Lubrication Question
Gang,
Sorry in advance! I imagine this has been covered repeatedly, but tell me if I'm wrong please.
60 SAE for both engine AND gearbox lubrication?
or
50 SAE for engine, 60 SAE for gearbox?

Re: Quick Newbie Lubrication Question
I think it depends on your location and time of year. You'll get a lot of different opinions on the topic and it's been covered several time so you might want to use the search function as a tool, it's also covered in the service manual.... I personally use 60 weight in the motor and 80/90 gear lube in the trans year round here in Texas.

Re: Quick Newbie Lubrication Question
jd,
I was still unclear since there was such a varying opinion on the oil types.
the HD manual says 75 SAE for the engine, but that sounded suspect. the manual didn't go into much detail about the gearbox lube requirements

Re: Quick Newbie Lubrication Question
Pretty sure the general concensus will be 60wt or 20/50 engine and 60wt or 80/90 in the trans. Usualy, the cooler the temp the thinner the oil. Either will work..

The 75 # is not a weight, but an obsolete HD numbering system.tcb-1 wrote:jd,

Re: Quick Newbie Lubrication Question
H-D 105 is 60 weight, 75 is 40 weight, 58 is 20 weight.

Re: Quick Newbie Lubrication Question
To make things one step further....105 = SAE60 wt = Extra Heavy, and 75= SAE50 wt = Regular Heavy. Don't forget, percentage allowed for cling....bosheff
