Oil problem-advice needed

#1

Post by Merlin »

Hi all.
This weekend i started up my 64 duo after winter rebuild. What i´ve done is mostly top end but the bottom have also been disassembled for checking up and measuring / cleaning up. Well, everything looked fine there so i havent done anything else than installed new gaskets. Now to the problem, When started ,ALL oil exits trough breather to primary chain. I have disconnected oil filter and checked hose and no oil goes back to tank this route. First thought was that i had geared the breather wrong but i opened the cover today and its correct. I also checked the ball valve and can see no problem. (new spring and ball installed) What would be the next thing to look into? Disassemble pump? Is it possible to have got wrong gaskets to the pump and blocked up a hole? Its a stock iron pump and stock engine with nothing changed.

Is it possible that the adjustment for the chain oiler is wide open? Do you get any oil returning to the tank if you close the adjuster completely?

The chain oiler screw is completely closed. I would think that at least some oil would return the right way even if it was open?

Did you have oil pressure when you ran it?
Any possibility that the drive key slipped out when reassembling the pump?

Thanks for your interest.
The pressure light went out immediately and the hydraulic lifters went quiet so i think the pressure was ok. I´m sure the key was in place but something is obviously very wrong here and i will probably disassemble the pump tomorrow to see if i can find something.
As i see it either the scavenger pump isnt running or the inlet to it is blocked for some reason. Or could there be some other reason?

G'day Merlin

Hasn't just sumped, has it? You know oil passing the check valve as it sits there,
you fire it up and oil is puking out the breather. If it sat there awhile with oil in it before you fired
it up, may have sumped....just a thought.

Mystery solved !
As panshovevo suggested ,the drive key was missing. Must have slipped away when i installed the gears i guess-a bit embarrassing i must confess. Couldnt see it anywhere but I´ll get a magnet tool tomorrow and try and find it.
A great thanks to all of you for suggestions and input.

Even the best of us make mistakes. I am (or was) a nationally known and respected dealer/smith in high end semi automatic rifles, and an occasional competitive tactical pistol shooter. I also have a .45 caliber hole in my leg from getting complacent and careless.
A few days ago, I started threading a rifle barrel to install a sound suppressor mount. Partway through, I was interrupted by a rattlesnake situation. After dealing with that, I returned to the lathe and resumed cutting. Next thing I knew, I was .040" past my target diameter.
Bottom line is: SH%T HAPPENS, don't worry about it. Fix it and move on.
Regards,
John
