Primary oiler

#1

Post by Pan57Johan »

Working on my basket case '57 pan with a '67 left case side. There is a short pipe in the back of it. Is that the primay oiler outlet?
Should it be a pipe from it going thrugh the inner trans? Does anyone have pictures?

Thanks,

Johan

G'day Johan

Wow! This sounds tricky maybe you should show us a couple of shots of this.
67s fed their primary oil direct from the pump to a line that went into the back of the
aluminium primary chain case. Where as 57s came through the cases and combined with the breather.
I can't remember any pipe coming out of the left case, unless some wizardry happened to your case.

If it screws into a boss just inside the oil pump and points toward the ground, that's the crankcase vent from the breather. Instead of going to the left case around the case stud.
Started in '65 with the aluminum Primary & recirculating oil from Primary to engine. If the chain oiler is on at all, this will always spray a mist of oil. Otherwise it should be bone dry air.

looks like its been cut off ,, suppose to turn and come in thru the hole ...the piece you think is welded to the case isnt it is acctually one of the case bolts , you'll need to remove the inner primary to remove the bolt "breather" to re-pair or replace it , not a big deal but important for oiling the primary chain...

Maybe I can put a rubber hose on it and lead it into the primary case?

pretty tight bend, but anything is possible, but once inside the oil needs directed down onto the chain.....

Ill try. I heard from the previous owner that it leaked from the primary case. So I guess it must have been from this pipe then. And it leaks now to as it stands in the garage. Is it something I can adjust on the oilpump?

If the previous owner refered to it as a leak it makes me wonder about what he knew or didnt know about his bike cuz that should be oiling the primary chain . I would nt try to shut it off, better get it turned in oiling the chain , I havent looked but that breather should be available if you cant come up with a fix.

Look at this topic: Crankcase breather pipe and belt primary, it appears to be the same set-up (the second pic).
