I'll be starting up my '48 with new pistons/rings soon. What type/weight oil would you use fo the initial break-in period?

I add some 2-stroke oil to my gasoline during break-in.

I dont run a different oil for break in.What I do is run the engine about 50 miles and change the oil. Then change again at 500 and go to my regular oil change interval.I always use a few ounces of marvel in the gas as a matter of routine.

your going to get a lot of diffrent answer here on this subject...
but this is my way....

20-50wt, get it started get it till you can just feel the temp on the heads...(thin oil gets in and on the parts to lube)
shut it down then dump the oil....
same oil then go thru about 4 more heat cycles, each being a bit longer....
then retorque the heads and base bolts, reset the lifters (solids)...
go for a ride 5/6 miles, then dump the oil

50wt valoline racing, then ride 100 miles, dump the oil....
at 500 miles dump the oil....
at 1000, dump the oil....
then at 2500-3000 I change it like I would from then on

Heres what I have been doing!--Assuming a street rode bike!--Use 20-50 or ST.50 oil!--Fire-up & ride about 10 miles, this will get her to operating temp.!, Shut-down & change oil while hot!--Let the bike cool to ambient temp. & Retourque the heads & check valve-lash if running solids!, HYD. are forgiviving & that little amount the head pulls down wont affect a HYD. LIFTER so lash will be fine!-(DONT forget to loosen the upper motormount!). Put new oil in & run the girl no more then 45MPH, & vary the RPMs!. Do this for a 100 miles -Then dump the oil while bike is hot!. Put new oil in & this time change the filter!, Ride the bike & dont go over 45MPH!, Do this for 500 miles!--Then drop the oil & change filter. Fill her up & ride till you get to 1000 miles!.--Drop the oil, filter while hot & refill with oil that you will be using!--(I do these steps & go to ST.60WT. oil!). NOW ride the girl normal you can take her to 65 if needed --The rings are seated within the first 2-300 miles!-if using Hastings iron rings!. If you used Chrome-Moly they take longer & you should not go over 45MPH for another 500 miles!-(1500-altogether for MOLY-RINGS, & at 1500 the bottom-end is broken in & moving parts have found thier HOME!). If using FORGED-PISTONS!--LET the bike reach operating temp. everytime you go riding! YOU will extend the life of these pistons Dramatically!--If stock cast pistons were used your good to go without a full operating Temp. Warm-up!. OK now ghange the st.60 1000 miles again!-& you are (done)-Breaking in motor!--In short YOU want to do 4-oil changes in the rirst 1000 miles!-Then again after you put a 1000 more on!--After I change mine every 2500miles!--without fail!--In hot summer 95-100 degree days I change it more frequently!, Like 2000 miles!--IN winter operation I go 3000 miles & change to 20W50 OIL!!. Also let the bike warm-up for 5-min. before I take-off!.---This HAS WORKED for ME for MANY MOOONS!--Everybody has thier ROUTINE!--(you will notice that the first 1000 miles ALOT of us change oil atleat 4 times in that milage!)---Use a GOOD FILTER & Magnetic drain-plug, added ins.!--RICHIE 8)
