How to change external oil filter
I have a '51 panhead with a canister type external oil filter. It's a paper filter with two metal ends. One end has 4 holes the other end is solid. Does the 4 holed side go to the top or bottom? I have the end where the 4 holes are towards the top and the rubber washer on the bottom and it's leaking through the top. Hope you can help. It's a beautiful weekend and I want to ride! Thanks in advance.

Yes, the top. There's some more dope on the filter in Vol. 1, but have a good ride.Does the 4 holed side go to the top
p.s. do not overtighten the cannister nut to try and stop the leak. Look for a metal flake in the top of the filter cap sealing edge. One flake will do you in.

Re: How to change external oil filter
Thanks to both of you for such quick replies. I have the filter in correctly but it looks like I don't have the washer in the right place. I'll change it around and check for metal filings but I cleaned them out pretty well with a magnet when I did the change. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well, despite your help I still can't get it to stop leaking. I put it in with the 4 holes up and washer on the top and checked for flakes. I think I'm going to have to buy a seal kit unless you have any other ideas. Thanks again.

Re: How to change external oil filter
you may want to try a new gasket. i have had little or no luck reusing them.
unless you can get the kit from a dealer, cutting your own out of gasket material may be your best bet to get on the road this weekend.
in a pinch you can cut the ear off a linkert bowl gasket and try that too!
