Oil Lines dry threads or sealer?

#1

Post by 64duo »

Whats the opinion of the group, i'm putting my oil lines back on the bike. Do these go on dry, or should I use a thread sealer or teflon tape?
Thanks Jonathan 64FLH

I have never used a sealer / teflon tape and have no abnormal leakage.

The seal is between the ground margin on the flared nipple of the oil tank and the smooth i.d. of the flare on the oil line (OE style lines). The cap holds this seal in place. The threads of the nipple and flared cap are not meant to seal.
Never use 3/8's copper tube for an oil line (the return-to-filter line from an S&S pump to the OE fillter). It wil fracture. Soft copper tube becomes rigid later on.
If you want the deluxe bender for 3/8's tube, it's the Ridgid #406. It bends a 2" radius in steel tube w/o kinking the tube or gouging the o.d. of the flare end.
