Oil pump question: do the 50-52 pumps work much better
Rebuilding a 1949 EL. The basket case came with the the late 50-52 oil pump. I have a 48 to early 50 pump body and to keep the motor correct I am going to use (would like to anyway) parts to make it right for my year bike (check valve spring, cover, cover plate and scavenger idler gear). Do the 50-52 pumps really work that much better? And... don't want to go the S&S route even though I know it would be a vast improvement.

Re: Oil pump question: 50-52 pumps
I don't consider aftermarket pumps as improvements. Just replacements. Your correct pump will provide more than enough oil. Tom at NOS Parts in Ohio will have any missing parts. High volume/pressure pumps, such as the aftermarket ones, may cause more problems than you realize. Over oiling can contribute to roller floating/skating, especially with cold and/or heavy oils. The old pumps provide adequate flow to all the rollers, along with plenty to the gearcase components and top end.
