Switch screen

#1

Post by thebeast »

Spare Parts manual lists # 26579-38 Pressure switch screen, but darn if I can find it in the illustration.
What is its purpose and does it go inside the nipple for the pressure switch?
Also, does the oil pressure wire get a crimp on connector or is the end soldered and held in place with the screw?
This is for a 49FL.
Thanks, James

Just found what I needed about the termination of the wire in the Palmer book, but no mention of the screen. Anyone?
Thanks, James

Beast guys yanked them screens before the first oil-change back then/Remember Hd was experimenting with HYD-push-rods Whatever they had so it would work properly!.You olny need the idiot-switch & it will be wrong unless you find an old used one or a LOT of OEMs then ILL take 2 off your hands! .Just solder & screwed on the oil-switch.--Richie

Thanks. I tried using a switch for a later model(shovelhead?), but it lit up way too early.I'll go back to the one I removed, which lit up at hot idle but went out with a little more rpm's.
After reading previous posts on the subject, this seems the norm with these aftermarket pressure switches.
Guess I better get used to it...it's summertime here in Looziana!

I'm referring to the screen that I'm guessing goes in the oil pressure gauge nipple. Ordered a Colony replacement nipple and it was in the package, about 1/4" OD coarse screen. No illustration in the parts book, just a part number. 26579-38.

Ok thanks, James.
I wasn't sure, it sounded like '58flh' was talking about the tappet screen. Couldn't figure out how the screen in the pressure switch related to HD experimenting with hydraulic pushrods.
Glad you got the fix..!

Reinstalled the pressure switch that previously came on the bike, WITH the screen that came with the Colony nipple. Took a ride and got her plenty hot. Lo and behold, NO oil light flickering at idle! Is this a fluke or does this screen maintain oil pressure somewhat at lower RPMs to the switch?
Who knows? I'm happy!
Thanks, James

The new, clean screen is likely just allowing a bit more oil in and keeping the light off. The best part is, is that you are happy and relieved that your engine is merrily drinking that dinosaur juice!

But..... it never had a screen till I installed one in the nipple!!! Just saying that maybe these aftermarket oil pressure switches come with NO screen like mine did and installing one may help low idle oil light flickering as it did on my pan.

I think Robbie nailed it, of course.
I suspect the function of the screen is more of a buffer than anything.
I think it's safe to say the screen isn't 'holding' pressure.
Congrats on the fix.
