Oil pump pressure adjustment

#1

Post by thebeast »

Still trying to get this figured out. Have a stock oil pump on a 49 Fl. Appears to have plenty return to the tank, but may be feeding more oil than returning.
Screwing the bypass screw in,wouldn't this increase oil pressure while restricting the flow, volume or amount of oil entering the engine?
58FL on another topic stated pans rely on flow more than pressure, with too much oil going to the pans.Wouldnt the increase in pressure restrict this flow somewhat? The factory put the adjustable bypass there for some reason or another.
There are several manufacturers that make stiffer springs for modern twin cams that increases oil pressure at idle and running rpms. Just wondering if I could do the same with the screw adjustment and sacrifice a little flow at the same time, maybe helping my over oiling problem.
Thanks, James

James,
I would check your spring length , I dont have the dimensions in front of me , but Palmers book has the sizes. varify it's the correct spring, I would adjust to factory settings only, what your attempting has nothing to do with that adjustment, get a good quality gauge ( like a snap on) and check your pressure while riding and see where it ends up at hot idle . I have the same pump. The stock 49 pump uses the cast cover, and as you probably know was a retrofit after oiling problems in 48's using the rotor. There's a shop dope on this. I can try and post it if you don't have it.

Adam, thanks for your reply. What reason do you think the oil pump bypass was designed adjustable for in the first place? Did this same pump fit multiple models? Wouldn't the screw adjustment make up the differance in spring length?
Just curious and hoping to find a cure for for the extra oil. Will try the gauge next just to see what happens.

It is for adjusting pressure James, but you need to use a gauge to set it or check it. I don't think you're going to get a wide range of adjustment.
