how far out should the spring be. its the adjustable kind should it be all the way in or stretched out????

Jim,
If it is a early stock pump, what is generally referred to as the check valve (on top) is not really adjustable. About the only way to change it's setting would be to use a different spring than the recommended one, part 26363-36.
The pump pressure regulating valve (on the side), if it is of the adjustable variety, is usually set so the end of the screw is out 3/8".

Loosen it till its 3/8 from the end or tighten it till it bottoms out . Then back it out 3/8

Use a dial caliper from the end it's 3/8 in. Make sure the spring free length is checked.

now if it was all the way out. it would over oil and come out the breather ?????

i turned it in till it was 3/8 from the end. kinda hard to see and guess just worried about not getting enough oil pressure. its returning while the bike runs i can see it pumping back into the oil tank. just nervous i guess my first panhead used to my ironhead
