Cast iron pump idler shaft

Checked the idler shaft on a pump I picked up, should it be flush with the body on the cover end? It's a few thou over , with the gasket in place the cover sits flush. Should I press it flush to outer surface ?

Pump gaskets are thin, I would press flush with body.
