Oil Light Switch

#1

Post by Times Welding »

Gentlemen,
Do any of You know of a source for an OEM oil light switch for my '59 DuoGlide? I'd really like to find one that looks right AND breaks at 3# like its supposed to. My oil pump is an original from '59 and (unlike earlier models) is machined 1/8 NPT for the switch. The earlier models used a 3/8-24 non tapered thread and a copper gasket that sealed on a spotface machined on the pump body. Mine has no such spot face and has the tapered 1/8" pipe thread. Thanks in advance,
Doug

I don't know it to be correct, for certain. That seems to be the value that I always see mentioned in the forums. Also, somewhere in the forum I saw where someone had tested several switches, both OEM and repop. The OEM units seemed to average around 3#.

P_K!

Try "sending" units in the search function with "cotten" in the author box.

I just consulted Palmer's book. It reads that the switch should open at 4 psi. Also, it gives the part number of 26551-39B for the switch (1959) and part number 26553-58 for the switch rubber boot. That switch part number has been superceded by 26552-72, which is also obsolete. Fortunately for me, Jim's Harley Davidson is near me and he is known for having lots of obsolete parts. In fact he has one of every year of PanHead in his showroom. Anyhow, he has the switch and boot in stock. I should be good to go.

Note that the "correct" oil switch will have a spade terminal on it to match the spade connector on the wiring harness.

Exactly. I was under the wrong impression that it would be a screw terminal. Mr. Palmer set me straight.

The spade terminal will be molded into the plastic switch top, not by adding a separate terminal to the treaded stud.
