Pre 1962 oil pump

#1

Post by socalrider »

Anyone know why moco went with different gears on the idler scavenge and feed oil pump gears? In mid 62 they went with a larger diameter shaft and a thicker idler feed gear without the protrusion that extends into the engine case. Do the later type gears provide more flow than the earlier? Would a pre mid 62 pump still work well in a 1963 flh stock motor? My 63 flh has the cavity in the case for the earlier gear.
Gracias,

Like is done for most companies, to eliminate a step in the manufacture. No difference in flow or pressure. Merely easier to make the gear with no shoulder. The larger diameter shaft stabilized it with no need for the pocket and shoulder arrangement. Saving money helped keep H-D alive when they were dying a slow death in the '60s.
