Panhead oil filter?
Looking at adding a oil filter to my shovelhead, I love the look of the old external panhead type
Oil filter, but I don't know how the aftermarket one hold up?
Also dose anyone know if K&N makes a replacement drop in filter for those old panhead filters?
Thanks!

Re: Panhead oil filter?
I did not have much luck with the OEM (cartridge) type of filter. Not only did it leak, but it was a very messy trying to change the cartridge.
Took it off and replaced it with a spin-on type. Kept the mounting bracket, and used new stainless steel lines, and installed it. Now I can change the filter without the message, and no drips.
Many claim there are ways to stop the leaks; I tried them all without any luck. But you can never get away of the mess trying to change it.
Actually makes changing the oil fun, sort of.........

Jesse!
Inexpensive paper elements are available, and far superior to modern attempts at the original "horsehair" design.
But as Rosemab points out, leaks are common from worn assemblies. And there is no way of knowing what might come new out of a box, either.
If you choose to toss nostalgia aside, beware of spin-on filter holders that do not have a pressure bypass valve.

PS: What happened to the poor Shovel's filter?

+1, you need to use an appropriate filter. I've used a Shovelhead spin on filter on my panhead for years. It's part # 63782-80 from Harley-Davidson.Cotten wrote:..., beware of spin-on filter holders that do not have a pressure bypass valve.

Re: Panhead oil filter?
Jesse!
The original Panhead filters have a spring-loaded ballcheck for when the oil is too thick, or the filter plugged.
An oil pump can only force its way through so much resistance, and the rest goes past the check.
When the oil is warm, it all goes through the filter, we presume.
With a spin on assembly, the by-pass must either be incorporated into the housing, or perhaps within the element. I confess that I have no experience with such things.

The spin on filter mount and filter have relief valves.
