Fluids

Post by fishican »

This may sound like simple questions but I need to ask...I just picked up a 64 FLH and I was wondering what kind of oils to use in it? What kind of engine oil and tranny oil should this pan take? I've been told that the primary is fed from the engine oil tank. Is this true? If not, what do I use there as well? Also, does today's gasoline have any negative effects on this machine?

I have not been able to get my hands on an owners manual and hope that you can help a newbie out.

OK guy!--IN hot weather use st.60wt. oil in motor!, You can use the same in the TRANNY!, THE Primary is not fed into the system , however the chain oiler is run on scavenge oil from engine!. You can shut the oiler off , or let it lube the primary chain!-(smart to let it LUBE!)-how much you will have to figure out because every pump will flow more or less at the same setting!, I run mine a half-turn open from closed position!-(this is good for mine!)-you may need more or less!.--Clean out oiltank of all sludge if sitting for a long time!.--If bike runs GET it hot by putting 10--15 miles on it & bring motor up to operating temp.!, THen change the oil!, While hot more will come out!. If it has a filter ,put a new one on!. I strongly suggest you get a MANUAL for your BIKE!, your going to need it!---This site has alot of indo in the knowledge base!---& you can download somethings to!. In cold weather use 20 W 50 oil & be good.--Good-LUCK---RICHIE-(58flh) 8)

I started using 20 50 after I got the 51 motor rebuilt, it seemed to work just fine. I still use it in the 64, tyranny too.
