External Oil Filter

#1

Post by lownslow »

I'm going through the '59 I got and am checking everything over, changing out all fluids, greasing, oiling, adjusting, etc.
Previous owner didn't do much except ride it to a few shows and the local Starbucks.
When installing a new oil filter, there was no fiber washer on the bottom acorn nut. It wasn't tight at all and yet was not leaking. Hmmmmm. I cut a thin piece of hose and slipped it in there so I could at least ride it, still drips slightly. Anyone know where I can pick up some of the fiber washers or should I just make one from some gasket material?

On the lighter side.........man does she ride nice!!!!

Most good auto parts stores and garages that work on cars have assortments of fiber washers. There are usually lots left over from carb repair kits, etc.

I use a rubberized washer available at most hardware stores. A thin metal washer with a rubber washer bonded to it.

The dealer still carries original part # 63858-49 (earlier version of the evo rocker box washer that John suggested)

Brilliant John. I still have some of those laying around from when I replaced the lower rocker box covers about 6 months ago on the '98. Leave it to me to complicate things. I guess if it was a nut holding on a mirror or something, hey whatever, but it's the oil system, the lifeblood of the engine and I'm just wanting to make sure all is well.

Thanks gentlemen!
