Oil pressure switch
Oil pressure switch
Hi
After oil (and oil tank) change I noticed, that the wire to the oil pressure switch had broken loose, I re-connected it, but now the OIL light on the dash don't light up, when I turn the ignition on?
If I connect the wire to ground or the base of the oil pressure switch, then the light will come on - but I cannot get it to light up, when I connect the wire, any ideas?

BULB! & check all connections!---Sometimes to tight on the dash will produce shorts.--Richie
Re: Oil pressure switch
The bulb works fine - it lights up when I connect the wire to ground or the base of the oil pressure switch.
My first thought was that the bulb was blown, so I swapped it with the GEN light bulb, and the both work fine when in the GEN light socket.

Re: Oil pressure switch
IF work in gen socket ,Have a good look at the oil-light socket!---MAYBE the sending unit itself is bad & in need for a new one!--Again check all connections & wires involved for insulation being scraped off & shorting to cotact conections --pull on them if not soldered!-(ALL should be soldered for dumb problems dont rear thier head!)--I had crimped connections way back when!, Then the following season ALL WAS SOLDERED & heat shrink over the connections!-NEVER ANOTHER CONNECTION PROBLEM AGAIN!---RICHIE

Re: Oil pressure switch
If the lamp lights when you ground the wire, but not when the wire is attached to the oil pressure switch(with engine off), then you need to replace the oil pressure switch.

Re: Oil pressure switch
This is exactly how it behaves (with the engine off).awander wrote:If the lamp lights when you ground the wire, but not when the wire is attached to the oil pressure switch(with engine off), then you need to replace the oil pressure switch.
It worked two days ago and I have not been out riding since, so I just think it's a little strange if it is the switch.
I will have a look at it again when I get home from work

Re: Oil pressure switch
Be carefull, i dug through many milk crates in search of a good switch. The repops are junk, no telling when they ground, everyone one I checked was different. Pull it, clean the threads and give one more try.

Re: Oil pressure switch
Anders,
It has to be the switch or the connection to the switch.
If it's a push-on connection, watch the light as you
wiggle the connector.

Re: Oil pressure switch
Anders,
It is also possible that the wire may be broken inside the insulation, just behind the connector.

Hi
Found it - you will never guess what was wrong
I remembered that I had put a cable tie on the wires going down the frame (under the seat), when I cut the tie the OIL light went back on again
Not sure exactly what this means, but if the problem returns I now know where to look.
Thanks for all your inputs - what a great forum.
