Oil for motor break in.
Just finished rebuilding the motor. What oil is reccommended for break-in? I am on the fence but will run either 20w50 synthetic or 60w synthetic by Amsoil. Normally you dont use synthetics for break in, because it can prevent proper seating of rings, but I have also heard modern rings dont "seat".

for the break-in you just need oil, real oil, not the fancy-schmancy synthetic stuff or anything too heavy. Fill it with straight 50 weight or 40 weight (depending on how cold it is where you are) and run it in. After a proper run-in (200 to 500 miles or so) drain it out, completely, and refill it with your oil of choice. Synthetic is ok, but there is nothing wrong with good old straight 50 or 60 weight. Clean oil is better than dirty oil, and dirty oil is better than NO oil, the bottom line is oil is oil, you need it, make sure you always have a good supply and circulation.

I personally wouldnt put synthetic oil in any 60 year old bike.I have seen nightmares back in the 80s when they used synthetic products in old bikes.Plus the fact that synthetic oil cost 3 times as much as regular oil.

Synthetic will be fine. I've put over 90k miles on mine and I just put rings in it in December. I've used synthetic oil for about half those miles. The cost is stupid though. That's why I quit using it.

I agree with Mike and Hog54. I tried synthetic oil years ago on my 60 year old bike and oil leaks appeared.
Don't know why, happened after switching, can't explain. I'm sure performance wise it's ok.
I use SAE 50 Morris elite oil specifically recommended for vintage bikes without oil filters.
Use in engine and trans.

Folks,
The first oil through the motor comes out the dirtiest.
Some folks bleed off the initial start into a jug immediately, but that's not always practical with a stocker. So I encourage a dump at fifteen or so miles, and perhaps another flush of the tank as well.
It goes without saying that no motor should be deflowered without a perfectly clean oiltank, filter, etc., to begin with.
It is not uncommon for a rebuild to show a "bloom" of metal in the oil when viewed in the sunlight.
Such motors can go on to long and healthy lives, as they are only doing the final machinework upon themselves, at all of the micro environments that a righteously tight-toleranced rebuild creates.
A loose-as-a-goose rebuild might not, but expect another rebuild before its time.

Motor

I was told by my engine builder to use 20-50 at least for the break-in period, both in the engine and tranny since all the bushings were replaced and he fit them on the tighter end of the clearance range. He also said the 20-50 would help the pump prime faster. I changed the oil after several heat cycles and one maiden voyage and also checked head bolts and base nuts...Mike
