cylinders 120-48 help.

Does anyone know anything about cylinders casted 120-48 on front and nothing on rear. were on a 49 el. Thanks

Are they one year only in 49? Are they original oem, I think so but not sure..

Sounds like your rear cylinder might be aftermarket....

All early cylinders are "120-XX(X)", X is the first year.

If there is only 1 new cylinder pair in a year, the cylinders are numbered 120-XX front and 120-XX1 rear.
If there are more new cylinders the same year, the next pair is 120-XX2 & 120-XX3.
Example: both the 45 and VL cylinders changed in 1936. The 45 is 120-36 & 120-361, the VL is 120-362 & 120-363.
This is true for many older casting numbers (not part numbers!).

Folks,

As I have posted previously somewhere, my '49 EL project has OEM cylinders with no date codes.
With a very low VIN, they obviously left-overs from '48 productions.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure they were worth getting worked on. I thought the rear seemed to be original also. Its type of construction is identical to the front.
