front cylinder compression and other panhead woes

#1

Post by Davereif212 »

would'nt start, checked all the usual stuff. no compression front jug. messed with the pushrods with no success.took head off (lots of fun). Valves appear to be seated OK. Piston seems a little loose in jug and top of piston looks kinda beat up. S&S 80 CI with S&S flywheels and stock heads, could it be a problem with pistons, rings? Thanks. Dave R, 1959 FL

Could be rings or valves. Didja have any compression at all? If ya got the head off turn it upside down and fill the combustion chamber with gasoline. Make sure the spark plug is installed. Let it sit for a while. If a valve is leaking the gasoline will leak between the valve and the seat and enter either the intake runner or the exhaust port depending on which if either of the two are leaking. Some times it takes overnight, but there is no disputing the results. If the valve is leaking, the gasoline will pass through....bosheff

I would think if it took overnight for the gass to leak through, the heads would be able to supply more than enough compression to run on.....course that being said....sometime I'm better off when i don't think. IMHO

You had also mentioned that you had alot of play in the piston & rod set-up Before you assemble check it over good-- take a few measurements--just to be on the safe side.,afterall that Front-jug s a pisser.(good-luck for many rides to come!) 58flh
