cylinder base gasket sealer

#1

Post by FL58 »

Hello,
I have to put my cylinders back in place after bottom end rebuild.
Do I have to apply a coat of gasket sealer to the cylinder base gasket or not ?
If it is better to add gasket sealer, which one shall I use as I have the choice between 4 different Permatex (blue, grey, black and copper) and
Loctite sealant SL5923
thank you for your help
Sincerely

I use high temp axel grease on all my paper gaskets...been doing it for 30 yrs or so,I never have to scrape a gasket and I can reuse them if I need to....

YES /I to use grease on base & cam-cover,-lifterblocks.If your surfaces are CLEAN/& Smooth so you can take a cotton-swab & pull it across the surfaces & no cotton gets Pulled/You have GOOD surfaces & grease will do you fine.Remember after Tourquing the nuts///Wipe any excess off!--& dont worry about the smell when you start the bike!--Its just leftover grease from where its hard to reach & your Fingers!.I also used the (PERMATEX SPRAY-ON Copper sealent -But olny on Bad surfaces where a .004 plug guage would slip under without force!.Other situations that may call for the copper/spray is using NO-GASKET!--This stuff holds & cleans up easy with our caustic gasoline.---Richie.

I have always installed them dry, no leaks, but they are hard to remove
