Steel or aluminum lifter blocks for solids

#1

Post by clunker1 »

For an S&S generator case, what would be the best choice for lifter blocks when using solids? I have a set of both steel and aluminum lifter blocks that are usable. The steel blocks would provide flow of oil to the side of the lifters and the aluminum blocks would block off the oil supply holes to lifters and possibly increase pressure to bottom and top oiling (similar to older panhead engines). The aluminum blocks would likely wear instead of the lifters as well.

Any thoughts?

Use the steel lifter guides, and sell the aluminum ones to someone doing an early motor.

I would run the pair that had the sweetest fit, (per factory specs) to the cam followers that you plan on usin. Hopefully, that would be the steel units....bosheff

I’d run S&S blocks on the S&S mill.
Just another opinion.

I have always run solids on ALL my bikes!--When running a solid tappet motor use the STEEL lifter guides!--In over 20yrs. I olny had to hone them 1-TIME!.& Im still on that size without problems!.The same bottom on my bros shovel except for ALUM. lifter guides/He had honed & replaced a few times!--In a short explanation ,-He is on steel/guides now & no issues for YEARS!--We put on a lot of milage every year & change rollers every year/--The lifter to guide clearance is TEXT-BOOK PERFECT!//-When I had my problems with ALUM.-guides The rear & front EX. were badly worn,& the same for the genny-shovel!---Respectfully----RICHIE
