Ring gap position

#1

Post by socalrider »

Have heard of a few different ways of spacing the ring gaps on a piston. 180* apart, 90* apart, gaps staggered to front and back of piston or install like an "X".what say you pros on this ? This would be for a 65 panhead stock stroke 50 over pistons.
Gracias,
Arnulfo

You never put the gaps front to back.Put the bottom oil rings side to side on opposite sides and do the same with the top 2 compression rings.Basicly set the bottom oil ring gap towards the cam side and run every ring opposite on the way up.

The factory manual just states "equidistant" that is 120 degrees apart.

And after 30 seconds, they'll be spinning like hula hoops.
Don't worry about it.

I always staggart them 180 degrees apart, starting with the oil-ring & then opposite all the way up!---They always seat nicely & thats what yer looking for!--Richie

Kitabel is right, just think what the cylinders would look like if the ring gaps were stationary.

They spin but they still dont line up.I dont know how much either because it seems to me thier always in the same position when I take it apart as they were when I put it together.

Yep, they need to be clocked around but doesn't matter much where you start.
I put a compression ring in upside down once. Not so good.
Don't need no stickin glasses, yeh right.
