Aluminum or Stainless?

I getting ready to place my heads back on my motor and was just wondering?I have both stainless and aluminum valve covers here and wondered which was stock on a 54?

As far as I know nether is correct. Stainless was 49 only and aluminum started in 55? So it's got to be good old run of the mill steel. Bob L

Try sleeping with your Palmer's beneath your pillow.

'48 was chromed steel, '49-'56 was stainless, and anodized aluminum thereafter.

Thanks Tom, you just answered a question I've had for a long time. I always wondered that if the Stainless was a one year only then why are there so many of them around.

Thanks I always wondered too because I never seen a 54 with aluminum pans and mine had them on it.But mine wasnt exactly stock when I got it either.
