I have a set of connecting rods that I pulled out of my 53 pan. They have XA-706 and XA-705 stamped on the sides. Does anyone know who makes these rods.

Can U identify XA-706 & XA-705 rods?

Derf
Those are the original, factory, OEM rods, they came from Harley. The numbers cast into the shank of the rod are casting numbers, not part numbers, used by the foundry that cast them. Probably Motor Casting Company, the same foundry that made most of Harley's castings.

I guess since my engine builder I went to get a quote from didn't know that. I should think about finding a different builder.

Derf.
Yeah, you might want to look for another "expert" builder.
I know for sure that Harley has been using the -705 & -706 identifiers at least since the 1920's on all their rods. The -705 is the female (forked) rod and the -706 is the male (single end). They used different letters to further identify which engine they fit:
MA - JD series 74ci pocket valve
SA - VL series 74ci flathead
UA - WL series 45ci flathead
XA - FL series 74ci OHV
etc.
I don't know if there is a complete table published anywhere showing all of them, if anyone has one we should put it in the knowledge base.

I believe '73 and later rods did not carry the numbers (and were also .030" shorter), so it is possible that a competent rebuilder could have overhauled many Chubbles over the decades without ever encountering earlier models.
But it certainly makes one scratch one's chin.
Ask how he straightens and aligns rods, which is prudent after every rod rebuild. If you get a wide-eyed reaction (like a deer in your headlights), you probably want to shop around.

PS: I still learn something new every day, and I stopped doing motors years ago!
