Look at these heads borrowed from an auction site. I'm assuming the indented dots on the left of the casting represents some information to the machine shop that may have worked these over at some point. Can anyone read the language and tell me what this means to a machinist/mechanic type person. I've seen it before but since i'm neither I have always wondered.....
Thanks

They look a bit large for a hardness tester. It is possible that it is production coding from the foundry. I deal with a foundry that has four patterns for a part we machine, and parts from each pattern have the pattern code plus a code for shift poured on.Joe G. wrote:Looks like a hardness tester???

Cotton is correct in this isue with the dimples--(they are witness marks & nyes the rocker-arm +blocks will also be dimpled to!. There is no method to this madness--its just what 1 machinist prefers to another!. (I my self do this all the time I do a motor--I use them in other hidden areas to.) 1 day 9yrs. later you get a motor-job --& behold its one you did already, now you look-up your records & you know exactly what was done to the engine at that time!. It really is a big help. A couple of us know eachothers marks so when a job comes in ---there it is all the what & who & did this is gone!---a real BIG-HELP!-Good-Luck everyone have a great weekend!--58flh (Also what Mogman said is true my 58 has 56 headcastings also)
