Damaged front end stem
I recently took off an aftermarket front end to go stock. When I started putting the Hydra glide front end on, the nut wouldn't tighten down enough to pull the lower tree up to the lower cup. The nut would just stop about a 1/4" short. So I pulled it back off and noticed some damaged threads. Not terrible, but enough to stop the nut. Anyway, I don't have a thread gauge and was wondering if anyone new the threads per inch? I was thinking I could get a die and run down on it. Is this the right idea or do I need to take it to the machine shop or get a new stem(this one is straight)? Also the stem is considered 1" for the die size, correct? Thanks

I don;t know the TPI, but if you can get one in the right pitch, a thread file would probably be a better investment. It will usually have 8 different thread pitches on it, and is great for fixing/restoring damaged threads.

Awander is correct---Also a die is made to cut threads, you would actually want a chaser or a thread-pitch file as was said before!. Good-luck & its nothing to worry about--10 minit fix)--58flh

Probably a helluva lot less expensive than snap-on, and just as good quality.
