Aftermarket Auto Advance Dilemma

#1

Post by xlch72 »

First off I realize the best advice I'll get is to throw the damn thing in the garbage!!!

I have a used aftermarket auto advance timer. When I move the weights to the advanced position it turns the cam counterclockwise contrary to what the manual says is correct. The weights appear to be 32522-67 with roll pins.
I thought the guy I bought it from installed the pins wrong so I drove one pin thru to the other side thinking that if I just flip them over it'll pivot correctly but (the pin) won't go in the hole!!!

Anybody have any ideas what's going on?

Yeah I know why am I even bothering with this setup but it's got curiosity peaked!!!

Thanks

Why are you putting a pin there?

That's the way they are made. I believe the pin keeps the weights from hitting the base assembly walls when fully advanced.

Yes the springs would have to be switched around to work correctly but, that's not the problem. With the weights installed like this, which would turn the advance cam clockwise. the pins will not line up with the holes in the base plate.

If you do a search on here you will find info on the unit you are working on. It does in fact turn in reverse of normal. Do Not try to change that! You need the correct idler/drive gear in the camchest for it to work. If you do not have it you are wasting your time. The parts in it are late cone engine pieces, not early stock ones. the drive gear is available from someone aftermarket but I can't remember who right now.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably just shelve the unit for now and stick with the manual advance.
