magneto query

#1

Post by rigidpanman »

if i missed a good thread on this someone let me know.ok,panhead with an old manual advance mag,not sure what brand.its a 2 piece unit,2 years ago i pulled the head of the mag so i could do a top end on the motor, the base stayed in the cases.finally getting around to putting it back together.i put flywheels with the line in the hole and then set the head back on the base, thats probably not the way to do it.im apparently not firing at all,it wont spit, sputter, kick back or anything.i know the mag goes in with the point cam lobe, big or small about to break open the points.i dont recall if it is the big lobe or small and if the mag is at full advance or retard.would someone give me a heads up on this.thanks

i need to reopen this topic.i understand that i can use a buzz box to set my mag, iirc the buzz is supposed to go off when the points open, however my buzz stays on no matter which way i turn the mag.i have the box hooked up with one wire going to the ground post on the mag and grounding the other to the body,is that correct?any help is appreciated.

1-set the mag point gap at .015"-CLEAN the points! 2-remove the front intake pushrod tube clip, spark plugs and timing plug.3-rotate the engine until the front intake pushrod goes up and starts down 4-locate the timing mark in the timing hole 5 install the mag so that the points are JUST starting to break on the narrow cam lobe.(I use a bugler cigarette paper for this).lock the mag down and youre done.

Steinauge is correct except for one item he did not mention. If your mag has an advance mechanism, when the timing mark is in the hole the points need to be breaking at FULL ADVANCE. Don't set at the retarded position.
