Mag question

#1

Post by badbird »

as much as we dont want to change the pan too much, This bike is for riding and id feel much safer with a magnito ignition

I dont want to start shaving fins and chopping lumps off the cases, Id like a good auto advance mag that is a direct fit,
does such a beast exist?

The G5 Morris will go in without any case mods. But I'm not sure about the fins on a 60 head. 58 to 62 fins were alot longer and heads have to be removed to remove the timer.

IIRC it only retards when the engine stops, which helps starts but doesn't retard at low engine speed.

Kitabel!

So its an "auto-retard" instead of an auto-advance?

How slow do you have to go before it becomes annoying?

I have over 5000 miles on my panhead and have never had a problem with the stock timer.
On the cross country ride last summer mags were failing every day on the 1915 Harleys.
If you want reliability stay with the original ignition system.

C'mon, Folks,

Comparing century-old Splitdorfs (Dixies, Bosch, whatever) with modern magnetos is silly.

No offense to Cotten, and no comparisons to old magnets, but it just begs the question "why"?
Battery and coil ignitions replaced magnetos for the basic reason that they are less trouble to maintain. I have and have had lots of other bikes with magnetos and bikes with coils and have never felt at a disadvantage with a battery and coil set-up. And if you don't know mags and understand their limitations and idiosyncrasies you are just creating a future problem.

having always had unit triumphs and such like I well know feelingwhen some dick turns your lights on while your in your favorite pub/club or whatever meeting place you chose, and you come out to a dead batery I know what happens when you zenner dies and kills your battery the alternator gives up,and a million other things,
when i got older machinery (pre unit triumphs and BSAs) it just diddnt matter,
i agree in an ideal world the breaker/coil is good, i never had a lucas mag die ever, iv repaired slip rings with araldite and had the repair last 15 years,
I am putting a mag on the unit triumph now thats easy these days but the pan?I just dont want to ruin anything but i want a mag simple as that
so is the morris a direct fit then I looked at the site they say it is and dont differentiate between years and models
anyone?

Badbird!

That's your criteria for an ignition system?

no i guess that is a lame excuse, I fully know that a well functioning battery/coil ignition is unbeatable, and to me points are much better that the electric gismos My triumph has the boyer branston optical ignition system...its bloody awfull,

I guess its what your used to and feel comfertable with,
the biggest problem with the pan is at a slow idle switching on the lights or pushing the brake cuts the motor dead,
My AR system on the pan is a bodge up and was from the start i dont have a left hand twist and someone jury rigged a system that just dont work well,

i just dont recall ever being worried when i had mag powered bikes
