Dual point swap

#1

Post by Zoomin »

I have a stock 62 FLH with the stock dual point distributor and wondered if I could go with a single point style distributor. What all would be involved? I've got a used O.e.m. single point distributor that I believe is correct for replacing the two point distributor, I also have the older single point style coil to replace the dual coil set-up. I assume I would just have to install and wire things as you would on a pre 1961-1962 dual point FLH. Am I missing anything here? The reason for the swap is I wanted to try the Ebeyond 2000 Quick start electronic ignition and it's my understanding that they are built for single point distributors only. Also can I swap out these two distributors without removing the front head if I separate the points base from the bottom half of the distributor? What do you guys think?

Sure you can swap the single set-up in place of the duelly pieces. Yes you can remove/install either unit without pullin the front head....bosheff

I guess my only question would be WHY??

I encountered a '61 once where the circuit breaker stem would not clear the front head's fins for removal.

Never seen a distributor though.

The dual-point timer was H-D's finest ignition.

I've tried the S&S housing with a Crane Hi-4 and a Spyke ignition, didn't like either, went back with the good old dual point. I had to remove the front head on my 61 FLH.

To answer the why I would swap out the dual point circuit breaker ( sorry) was like I said in my first post. I guess I’ve got it in my head to try an electronic ignition system that is no maintenance. Something I can “set it and forget it” sounds as though those systems have performance benefits as well as no wear components to adjust or replace.

Hypothetically,

Both systems are sound.
But things happen.

It is difficult to fix either points,..
or an electronic pick-up ...
under a bridge abuttment in the rain many miles from home.

But points and condensors pack into your toolkit better.

Can't argue with you Cotton, I don't know, just got that thought in my head about the swap I guess. Just kicking the idea around and looking for some input from you guys. That happens sometimes over the winter when it's too cold to ride here in Northwest Indiana. I kind of day dream about these types of things. Hunting a project perhaps. Just wondered what kind of task it would be and plus I had the comfort of knowing I could put everything back to stock, if or when, I decided to do so. It didn't seem like too big of a commitment. Who knows the weather is about to break here and when it does I'll probably just go to the garage fire the old girl up and just ride it like it is over the warm weather months like I have for years. I can think about that swap while I'm tooling around on my dual points and perhaps on some rainy day when I've nothing better to do.
