Points keep moving out

#1

Post by pan57 »

Hey guys I am having a problem with my points moving out. About every 150 miles my bike starts becoming hard to start and what I figured out is that the points are moving out. Once I reset it the bike starts like normal. Question is what is the best way to lock down the brass screw that holds the points down? Or is this a common problem that I just have to deal with?

Have you checked the rotor shaft for side play?

Are you sure it is the points moving? Or is it excessive wear on the rubbing block. You did lube it, right?

I am sure it is the base of the Points that is moving because when it gets hard to start I do my usual checks and the points are usually set about .026-.028. So what I do is set them back to .022 and she fires right back up. Does any one use locktite on the brass screw.

Actually, re-reading your post I am not sure why you have a brass screw. Every circuit breaker I have ever seen has a steel screw holding the points. The adjuster screw (which isn't a screw at all but an eccentric pivot with a slotted head) is brass but the screw is always steel. I would try replacing it with the correct one and bet your problem goes away!

I am replacing the brass screw with a regular screw and I will do a couple of hundred miles this weekend and find out if that solves my problem. Thanks guys.
