timing marks

#1

Post by cavemasterdon »

a little background-
65FLH lower,66 shovel jugs/heads, pistons I was told were 70 over,andrews ab cam, S&S super B carb, mallory billet timer #556.
I've got a little chug then cough when crusing, constant throttle, all gears.checked the plugs, nice and tan(now that I know how to use the fuel enricher), went in to check the static timing and found 2 timing marks.
single slash showing when #1 @ TDC, rotate crank and find a double slash. What are they for and would the timing affect the chug/cough?

The timing mark with two slashes is for the rear cylinder timing mark, at least it should be .

Now the cough , that could be a lot of things, bad plug , collapsing hydraulic lifter, carb. tuning ,sticking valve , the list will probably go on .

I've never had a "B" carb, maybe a bigger intermediate?

timing marks 65 panhead electra

#5

Post by 59DUO »

The original handbook for a 65 electra says that the single timing mark on the flywheel is for front cilinder fully advanced, 35 degrees before top dead center, and the double timing mark is for the front cilinder in retard position, 5 degrees before top dead center. So the fully advanced timing mark is checked with the breaker cam of the ignition completely turned against the springs of the advance mechanism and the retard timing mark with the breaker cam untouched. Greetings Rien.

to set the timing with a light I assume that I use the single mark? where in the hole should it be with a mallory model 556 timer?should it be as shown in the service manual?I have the harley service manual(59-69) and can't find any reference to a double mark, different book?

Cavemasterdon, You don't think that’s long enough do ya. Your cough was caused by one thing. The SS Super B. It has no accelerator pump. The carb was always a piece of it. When your riding you don’t realize that your letting off the throttle. When you go and get back on it. Then comes the cough. After fighting with that piece of crap for years and getting rid of it. I’m now a SU happy man for the last twenty years. Bob

I set my Mallory up on a timing light with the single slash dead in the middle of the timing hole @ 2000 rpm( 1500 rpms, may work also ) .

I had a "B " and there was an external accelerator pump you could put on it and man was that thing dangerous , stick the throttle at a moments notice , scary.

Change your spark plugs and see how she runs , there a cheap tune up .

try your mark on the right side of the hole per the manual and see how it runs...

be prepared to turn your idle screw down some.

hey guys,

i split the carb discussion to it's own thread if you are wondering where it went.

it is called linkert mileage and performance issues.
