eQuickstart 2000

#1

Post by Pete808 »

So I just ordered the eQuickstart2000 from eBeyond inc. I was thinking about going with a Mallory electronic igntition but didn't like the look of it. A friend suggested the Quickstart. Has anyone here had any experience with this product? I like that you can't really tell it is installed and you can take it off easily.

The Quickstart is a good ignition.

The bigger question would be why? The stock ignitions work just fine.

Auto advance? Why cause yourself that much trouble? The original system is simple. Retard a bit to start, advance after start.

My bike came with an auto advance set up. I'm having issues and was just looking for some modern upgrades since I ride the bike daily and have been stranded twice already.

Do yourself a favor and return the electronic gizmo. Pick up a stock timer- they are regularly on eBay in the $100- 125 range.
You might have some issues to get sorted, but replacing parts that work isn't the way to go. A properly tuned machine with no defects will start reliably and run well.
By the way, have you tested the manifold seals with compressed air and soapy water? Lovingly known as a "bubble test" in honor of the Mad Scientist, if you haven't done it yet, you absolutely need to.

What are symptoms/issues that left you stranded?

Generally, more electronics are not the solution.

+1 on the OEM timer. Never had an electronic ignition but an original ignition system set up correctly with no manifold leaks will start with one or two kicks.

I run the Quickstart with the Dyna 3 ohm coil. Runs great!

Same for me. One drawback I've heard of the points/condenser combination is the premature failure of condensers. However, I'm running an OEM timer on my '46 WL, and haven't had a problem with the condensers.

I'm not really sure. It just died mid ride and wouldn't restart. Checking it this week once I get a chance.

Look up Quick Start failure, in the knowledge base. Set up correctly, your bike will start easy, and be reliable. These bikes wouldn't have become the legends that they are if they weren't sturdy and dependable.

I am pretty sure I have battery voltage. I will check voltage and a couple things tomorrow when I get in. I am also going to do he bubble test thing to make sure it's not an intake leak and check the torque on the head bolts since I just put the thing back together.

48doc,

I have had no issues at all running the Quickstart 2000 for about 10 years now. I don't mind not having to change points anymore.

Did you get a chance to look at the bike this week? If so, what did you find?

Unfortunately no. I did take the carb off and check the head bolts. I had to re-torque a few. Maybe that was causing a leak? I will do the bubble test in a few days when I get some time.
