How has a good coil for '55 FL

I need a coil for my '55 FL. I know Tedd Cycles has them and most of them are mead in Taiwan. What have you used and had good luck with?

i am 3 for 3 rewiring originals. putting new plug wires in a original coil is not as hard as it seems.

no problems so far.

i do know that the repros have had polarity issues and short life spans.

what is wrong with the one you have?

I am after a 6V version. Unfortunately I don't have an original coil. The one I have is some aftermarket version. Unsure of the brand. I picked it up at a swap meet about 5 years ago to replace another aftermarket coil that failed. I would love to get an original, but at this point I just new one that might be good for a while to get the Pan running.

I have installed an EBeyond 2000 electronic ignition and the current coil that I have is not putting out enough consistent current to work. So just looking for a good repro version for now.

Remember that reproduction coils are wired backwards. Wiring them accordingly should extend the life span.

I did not know that. Very interesting. I have always wired then according to the wiring diagram. Maybe that is why they fail.

Can you give us more info on this, I have a repop coil wired as the original, before I go and reverse the wires can I test and tell if its wired backwards?

some of the repros have a plus mark (+) stamped next to the positive terminal. this terminal should be wired twards the source and the remaining one wired to the points.

The aftermarket coils that look like a beer can have been around for decades and work pretty well. The V-Twin 'replica' square coils are the wired backwards coils that don't last very long.

I just checked my repop coil from Vtwin, its got the - on the front side and + on the rear. I wired my coil accodingly. so far so good.

How do you figure? Wiring a coil backwards will give a weaker spark, but I can't see any way it would affect the life of the coil.

Is there a place to buy the round coils other that Tedds?

There was a thread a while back. I believe it showed taking the boot off the spark pug and holding a pencil lead between the boot and the end of the plug while kicking one way a spark jumps from the pencil lead to the boot, and the other way the spark jumps from the plug to the pencil. I am thinking this isn't correct. May be there was no pencil, but I believe it was Flathead six that shared the information with us.
