Re: what magneto brand??
I'd go for either on a deal. The heads on the new units are machined rather than casted, personally don't really care for the billet.

Edmond----all you read is true!--however morris has a G-5 MAG., thats auto,& a winder in it so you kick it lightly & it fires , downside its $1300 for gimmiks!, but this 1 actually works.-In my opinion go to a swapmeet or find a used one Hunt or morris eighther will get the job done!----Richie

Edmondpanhead!
Has the relay boss already been butchered from your right motorcase?
If not, be glad!
But give up the notion of a mag.

Edmondpanhead!
The relay mount on the case must be sawn off for a mag to fit.
If yours is so, go for it.
If your case has not been butchered for a mag, please don't butcher it.
If your existing ignition is OEM, there is no reason to change it.

Re: what magneto brand??
I run a mag on mine, its been on the machine at least 35 years. I run it because thats the way it came to me.
You'll kill a 1 K for a mag.
Start better? No
Run better? No
Faster? No
The new mags are ugly.
2 bits, no charge.

With the G5, you don't need to touch the relay boss on the case.

True confessions
Folks,
Back when motorcases still laid in piles in barns,
I skillfully removed one from my '49, so that it could be stitched onto a buddie's '51, who had no desires for a mag, but much for a timer control wire mount.
Now I am shocked at the retail price of repair bosses, as well as what modern tigmeisters demand for their services... many of which whom are inadequate. Add the art-carving and re-texturing, and hopefully ignoring any distortion to the generator deck, a quality replacement would be conceivably in the $500 range.
Thus I encourage folks to avoid the butchery any way possible, even if it means you are disposed to throwing an extra $500 or more at a mag.
I hope to find time this Spring to get back to my own mag project after fifteen years, and I am certain that a review of several discussions on this Forum will be revived as well.

Re: what magneto brand??
I tried to set mine up, a 58, in the east, west fashion as in your pic. Two fold, to get my hand on it easily (the pipe be very hot on finger tips) to bump it around as needed, and to move the head away from the heat. North, south on mine is the only way I could make it happen. I’ve seen east west on knucks and early pans. Wish I had piles to study on.

Re: what magneto brand??
If yer gonna go the mag route, get a 2 piece unit. If you do go the with a 2 piece, make sure it's not worn beyond service limit. Also make sure it's got fire or you'll be spendin more $ to get it workin....bosheff
