Morris magneto or disributor!!!
Hi
I'm new to this site so forgive me if i make a few mistakes. I wondered if anyone could help me with a morris magneto that needs a coil, the mag is off a panhead but i havn't got a coil for it. I dont know whether to buy a new coil or fit a standard distributor or go for a better distributor like a mallory. when i had the bike running with the mag, it was always a problem starting it on kickstart, maybe the magnets are losing their strength or the coil was faulty or something. the coil was took off and i have now mislaid it somewhere so i need to make a decision as to what i am going to do. Can anyone out there give me some advise as to what to do, either run the mag with a new coil or buy a new distributor. appreciate your help and thanks in advance. Scav-pan.

I've never seen a pan with a distributor, but I suppose anything is possible.

Welcome Scav-Pan!
Has your right motorcase been relieved to accept the magneto?
If so, you might as well stick with it, and fix it.
Harley timers didn't "distribute" the spark.
Dual-point timers came close, but basically a "distributor" has a rotor and cap like an Indian.
(I just found out my Toyota has one too. But no carburetor.)
If your mag does not have an auto-advance, then returning to an OEM-design timer would be the likely next best option.

scav-pan----Are you handy with tools?--as Cotton mentioned if the case is ground-down to retard the mag then by all means get what you need for the mag & install!---If your kicking your ass off starting, most likely a intake manifold leak!---Most important make sure you can FULLY RETARD the mag.---If your set on an electronic Ig. (mallory)--bike should be a 12V. Once installed & set,you never have to fool with it again!--Same with an auto-advance timer-(set & forget)-until points change.--Its all on you,but you all teady have the mag! so I know what I myself would do.---Richie

Yes, The Pan has STD cases and are relieved to fit the mag and clears to fully retard the mag also, I have been looking for a new coil for the mag, but can only find one for Flathead/Sportster in the UK, are they the same coil or are they wound diferently??? and if they are different, Why? Does the pan coil need a bigger or fatter spark? I'm running an SU carb from an old British car that's been modded with different spring and jet and these have run ok on my previous Shovels with no problem. Thanks for Your imput all, it is much appreciated

I Suppose We call them distributors in UK . It is just a name for the ignition system that we use in general terms, but not to anything specificCotten wrote:Welcome Scav-Pan!

You're Right, why spend excessive amounts of money when hopefully all i need is a new coil ! I've been looking around and all i can find is a coil for a flathead/sportster are they so different and if so, Why. They all need a spark! is it the different strengths of spark that the coils give out or what?58flh wrote:scav-pan----Are you handy with tools?--as Cotton mentioned if the case is ground-down to retard the mag then by all means get what you need for the mag & install!---If your kicking your ass off starting, most likely a intake manifold leak!---Most important make sure you can FULLY RETARD the mag.---If your set on an electronic Ig.
